2NE1 Debut Year
In the early 2009 press conference, YG Entertainment announced that he would debut a four-member girl group. At first, the group was to be called 21. However, YG’s ideas evolved and he finally decided that he would like to add a “new evolution” to music. The figure 21 in the group’s name represents the 21st century, whereas the letters N and E are the abbreviations to New Evolution. Subsequently, 2NE1 was formed.
2NE1 made their first show on May 19, 2009, where they featured together with BIGBANG in a promotional song, titled ‘Lollipop‘. Their unique, unusual style grabbed the attention of many individuals, as there were not many groups with such looks at that time. The group debut appearance was followed by the release of their debut single ‘FIRE ‘on August 17, 2009. The music video for ‘FIRE‘ was released twice, the first being a “space” version and the other a “street” version.
The song became an instant hit. It was written and produced by K-Pop/YG’s renowned producer, Teddy Park. The song topped Mnet‘s online charts at that time and soon enough brought 2NE1 to their first wins with “Song of the Month” and “Rookie of the Month”.
The group later followed up with another Japanese release in 2012. That same year, they embarked on a world tour that involved two stopped in the United States (Los Angeles and Newark, New Jersey), making them the first K-pop music group to perform solo in America.
They later released several more singles in 2013, including “Take the World On”, “Falling in Love,” and “Do You Love Me.” In 2014, they released their second full-length Korean album and third full-length album overall, Crush featuring production from Teddy Park with the singles “Come Back Home” and “Happy.” This is also their last group performance. On November 25, 2016, YG Entertainment announced that 2NE1 had officially disbanded, with CL and Dara pursuing solo careers.
